It is very beneficial for your body to lose fat and gain muscle.
Your muscles actually weigh more than fat, so you can get thinner and stay the same weight.
Or, in some cases appear thinner but actually weigh more than you did before! This would be caused by gaining a lot of muscle (which weighs more than fat...) and losing fat.
Don't worry though, that is not a bad thing at all, it's actually great for you. Sometimes people are left with saggy extra skin after they lose a lot of weight and that is partially due to a lack of exercise.
When involved in dieting, the best goal is to lose fat and gain muscle. It will ensure that you are also a healthy human being in general, aside from just being thinner. Health itself is the most important thing, I would much rather be overweight and very healthy than be skinny and weak or fatigued.
So what can I do to lose fat and gain muscle?
You'll want to start off by lowering your calorie intake by a pretty decent amount. I suggest anywhere from an 800-1200 calorie per day diet. Natural food proteins and/or protein supplements (shakes, smoothies..), are all excellent sources of energy and nutrition to help your body build muscle.
Walking, running, jogging, swimming, jumping jacks, push ups, sit ups, crunches, etc. are also very good at shaping your body and toning it without having to do rigorous workout sessions at a gym. Swimming works out almost every single muscle in your body and is probably the most fun and enjoyable exercise out of the ones I mentioned.
You will also need to do a bit more reading and homework before you can dive into your journey to lose weight and gain muscle.
